Hybrid Racing Low Temp Thermostat - K20A/K20A2/K20A3/K20Z1/K24A1 Engines

Running your RSX or Civic Si hard at the track and fighting overheating? A low temp thermostat might be what you need. It opens earlier than the factory unit, which lets coolant flow while you're off throttle between corners. That gives your radiator time to catch up and bring temps down before you're back on it. If your cooling system's already maxed out and you're watching temps climb lap after lap, dropping in a low temp thermostat often fixes it without adding a bigger radiator or more fans.

Opens Earlier, Gives Your Radiator More Time

The factory thermostat's designed for street driving where you're at steady load most of the time. At the track, you're cycling between hard pulls and heavy braking constantly. The factory thermostat doesn't open early enough to let the radiator catch up during those low-load sections, so your coolant temps just keep climbing until you're overheating. A low temp thermostat opens sooner, which means coolant starts flowing earlier and your radiator's got more time to bring temps down before you're back on throttle.

No More Temperature Hunting

Cheap thermostats cause temperature hunting, where your coolant temp bounces around instead of staying steady. That's hard on your head gasket and can eventually crack cylinder heads. Hybrid Racing sources these from Nippon Thermostat Co. Ltd., an OEM supplier that's been making thermostats since 1954. They supply over 50% of the cars built in Japan and their thermostats run in Le Mans and WRC cars. You're not dealing with temperature hunting or a thermostat that fails after one season.

Built to Last

Nippon puts these through extensive durability testing: heating and cooling cycles, vibration testing, engine bench testing, and real-world testing in road cars and race cars. A failed thermostat at the track means an overheated engine and a tow home, so durability matters. These hold up.

What You Get

  • Hybrid Racing HYPERCOOL low temp thermostat
  • Manufactured by Nippon Thermostat Co. Ltd.
  • Opens at lower temperature than factory
  • Prevents temperature hunting
  • Extensively durability tested

Fits Your Car

  • 2002-2006 Acura RSX Base (K20A3)
  • 2002-2006 Acura RSX Type-S (K20A2)
  • 2002-2005 Honda Civic Si (K20A3)
  • 2002-2006 Honda CR-V (K24A1)

Compatible Engines

  • K20A (RSX Type-S JDM)
  • K20A2 (RSX Type-S)
  • K20A3 (RSX Base, Civic Si)
  • K20Z1 (RSX Type-S)
  • K24A1 (CR-V)

Note: A low temp thermostat helps manage cooling at the track by letting your radiator work harder between pulls. It's not a fix for an undersized radiator or a cooling system that's fundamentally inadequate for your power level. If you're overheating on the street in normal driving, you've got a different problem.

Technical details:

Our thermostats begin opening between 18*F sooner compared to the OEM part.

Paraffin wax functions as the actuator for opening and closing the thermostat. As the temperature increases, paraffin wax expands, pushing against a plunger and spring, which directly actuates the valve. As coolant temperature decreases, the thermostat body is cooled. Therefore, the paraffin wax shrinks, and a return spring pushes against the valve and plunger to return the thermostat to a partially open or closed position.

The opening temperature of paraffin thermostats is primarily dependent on the spring rate of the return spring. The stiffer the spring, the greater the pressure the wax needs to generate to push the plunger. This wax chamber’s pressure is directly proportional to wax temperature. (Note: opening temperature can also be controlled by paraffin wax chamber and plunger geometry).
